Peer-reviewed (aka ‘refereed’)- Video - Peer Review in Five Minutes

What is it? A review of your work by peers. In the academic sense, the term ‘peer-reviewed’ refers to a work being examined by experts in the field. In other words, an editor will send a work, completed or sometimes in process, to other experts in that field.  The idea of it is to give expertise and fresh perspective to the work to check it for inconsistency, omissions, errors, etc. In other words, the objective is to make the work better and tighter.

Why is it better? The peer-review process is good because it lends further validity to the work. Experts are involved in checking and reviewing the work before publication. This process helps ensure an objective, well-thought, complete article that others can rely on and potentially use in further research.

Why do institutions of higher education rely on peer-reviewed work? The easy answer is because it has gone through a vetting process to ensure it’s value.
